I love reading (even though I have had to find ways to “read” while doing other things) and cozying up in a nook with plenty of pillows and some peace and quiet sounds like a perfect Sunday afternoon to me… perfect for a bit of reading and then a nap! We shared this beautiful built-in bed nook by DLR Designs a few months back and you loved it as much as we did. The bed nook is both space-smart with storage drawers underneath as well as beautifully put together by Debi, so today we wanted to share some of our picks for re-creating the same bohemian nook style in your own home. After you’ve built it following Debi’s instructions and our building plans, follow these 5 essential-but-easy steps to create a comfy, cozy, never-wanna-leave reading nook!
5 Essentials to Creating a Cozy Reading Nook

1 – Start SOFT with white fluffy bedding
It may or may not be practical for everyday (or every night) use, but a fluffy white comforter sure is comfortable and great for making a reading nook like this both look and feel plush and oh my FLUFFY. The white or cream colors keep it light and neutral, while the visual texture helps keep it interesting. If you just can’t love the white, try for a similar light-colored neutral to brighten up the inside of the nook. We picked some of our favorite textured neutral bedding to share (sources below the image), from the pintucked to the ruffly — and if those are a little too feminine for your space, try this Nate Berkus set that’s white and textured without all the frills.

2 – Create a cohesive color scheme
It doesn’t really matter which colors you choose, but choosing 2-3 colors to use in the curtains and pillows (and other decor in the room) helps keep your reading nook looking cohesive rather than just a jumble of pillows. Debi used pink and yellow for her main colors (browse our Color Files to see what colors speak to you!), and sticking to a simple color scheme allows the various patterns and textures to shine without competing too much. 3 – Add privacy and color with some fun curtains
Curtains are a great way to add a division and the idea of privacy without actually blocking the entire space off, whether you’re adding curtains to a nook like this or to a closet. The damask print of these yellow curtains is a fun splash of both color and pattern, but you could go with any color or pattern that fits your fancy. These damask style curtains closely match Debi’s pick, and we’ve picked some fun colorful patterned curtains (sources below), but you could also make your own, either from fabric yardage or from sheets or a shower curtain.

4 – Don’t forget the PILLOWS!
I always chuckle a little bit when I’m flipping through a magazine and see a beautifully styled bed with no less than 27 pillows artfully arranged — but for a comfortable reading nook, don’t skimp on the pillows! And don’t be afraid of some patterns either — Debi’s collection of different pillows is part of what makes her daughter’s bed nook so fun and stylish. To keep it cohesive, look for a variety of patterns in just 2-3 colors, like Debi’s picks that we found similarly online. And if these aren’t the color you’re looking for — check the website listed because most of these come in different colors as well.

5 – Light it up!
Adequate lighting is important for reading AND for ambiance in a closed-in space like a reading nook. You could add a wall sconce or a battery-operated tap light, but I love the fun and carefree feeling that a fun string of lights adds. I can’t even tell you how hard it was to narrow down our favorites to share here, so be sure to check out even more of the lights we love over in this post, too.
